CU Around the World – Dr. Sandy Roga (’99)

Dr. Sandy Roga and his family

Dr. Sandy Roga is from Santa Cruz, Aruba.

What was your favorite Cumberland moment?

I have many great moments, but I will narrow it down to three.

While playing baseball at Cumberland, we represented the United States in an international tournament in Mexico. During the tournament, I pitched against Mexico and Guatemala and won both games.

Another great moment came during the conference tournament in 1999, when my parents came from Aruba to watch me play. My father came to the bullpen and said, “Son, we came all the way from Aruba to see you play, so win this game for me.” I pitched a one-hitter that game.

My graduation was emotional and filled with a great feeling of satisfaction that is hard to describe.

Why do you support CU?

Cumberland changed my life forever. Meeting Coach Woody Hunt was one of the best things that happened in my life. As a Cumberland Bulldog, I got to know what tradition means in baseball.

What is your favorite Cumberland tradition?

CU baseball has a winning tradition. It creates a brotherhood much bigger than anywhere else in the country, and Coach Hunt is the architect of this tradition.

What makes you most proud to be a Cumberland alumnus?

Everything was personal. I wasn’t a number. I received a great education and a baseball experience that I would never change.
